1979年，Aerosmith 推出第六张专辑《Night in the Ruts》。专辑出版不久以后，乐队第二把手——Joe Perry（guitars）因为滥用药品而离开乐队。Jimmy Crespo（guitars）补充进了乐队，但是此时 Aerosmith 整支乐队已是一群终日不醒的瘾君子，《Night in the Ruts》是在一片烟雾腾腾中录制完成的，专辑的质量也就可想而知，《Night in the Ruts》在专辑榜名次为14名，仅仅卖出了金唱片的销量，但却是 Aerosmith迄今为止推出的所有专辑中成绩最差的一张，Joe Perry 被开除不久后，乐队的第二吉他手 Brad Whitford 也退出乐队，成立了自己的乐队开始另起炉灶。
