The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra launch their new independent record label, 'RCO Live', with the release of a live recording of Dvorak's Symphony No.9 'From the New World' by the orchestra under its new chief conductor Mariss Jansons.
"THEY don't appoint chief conductors lightly in Amsterdam. In 116 years the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra has had only five. The sixth, Mariss Jansons, made his debut in the role on Saturday. And if this exhilarating concert is any indication of things to come, I shall consider emigrating to the Netherlands....with this superbly disciplined band, anything is possible. That is the exciting thing about this appointment. A man who can work true alchemy on orchestras has been teamed with an ensemble capable of realising the subtlest nuance. The normally rather stiff Concertgebouw audience rose as one person and gave Amsterdam's new maestro a 15-minute standing ovation. I will probably tempt fate by whispering this, but it was a dream start to what could be a dream marriage."
