　　亚历山大大帝死后，他的帝国被各位将军瓜分。其中地跨中东和西亚的塞琉古帝国，是疆土最为辽阔，也是文化“希腊化”最主要的推行国家。生长在耶路撒冷的犹太人为了保护自己的宗教和摆脱迫害的命运，在马加比祭司家族的率领下奋起反抗。英雄犹大·马加比率领着其中最英勇的队伍，并取得了胜利，建立了犹太人自己的国家。
　　1746年的亨德尔早已扎根英国。其时威廉王子，昆布兰公爵粉碎了查理·爱德华的复辟叛乱，凯旋归国。亨德尔于仓促中组织了这部剧目，借古喻今，以歌颂公爵的胜利。亨德尔于脚本后书写了“智慧的、勇敢的、善良的指挥官”，献给公爵并在次年首演。因为作品当中富有通俗、优美的音乐，充满光明和荣耀的气质，很快成为受欢迎度仅次于《弥赛亚》的经典作品。
