简介:
Disappeared too early in July 2020, Nikolai Kapustin is a UFO in the Russian musical landscape of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Classic? Jazz? Difficult to label his music under a specific genre as the symbiosis is perfect between the two styles. The composer, for his part, chose his camp: "I was never a jazz musician. I never tried to be a real jazz pianist, but I was forced to do so for my compositions. I'm not interested in improvisation - and what is a jazzman without improvisation? All of my improvisations are written, of course, and so have become much better, it has made them better. "
These are perhaps the words that best sum up what one can feel when listening to Kapustin's compositions. Scores of a resolutely classical style, as evidenced by the titles "Concert Etudes", "Sonatine", "Sonata", but from which nonetheless escape harmonies, rhythms, a lexicon definitively linked to the jazz universe.
Relatively reluctant to defend his works on stage, the composer has recorded a large part of them all the same. This undoubtedly explains the small number of performers who dared to measure themselves against the pages of the Russian master, so much his interpretations captivated us by their perfectly mastered virtuosity. Almost a year to the day after Kapustin's death, Yeol Eum Son delivers some choice pieces here: among these, the unmissable 8 Concert Studies, Op. 40, and Piano Sonata No. 2, Op. 54. The South Korean pianist, silver medalist of the 2011 Tchaikovsky competition and accustomed to orchestral repertoires, gives a generous amplitude, depth and groove to these pieces, when Kapustin had accustomed us to dazzling interpretations carried out in a single gesture. Yeol Eom Son's playing shows how Kapustin's compositions are in line with the greatest masters, from the Romantic era to Gerswhin, and how they have their place in the concert repertoire.
