Sergei Kasprov - Exploring Time with My Piano (2014) [Flac/24/44.1]
These days, the performer is a time traveller. The past has long been tamed and turned into an organized space. In quest of historical authenticity, we try to fish for
objects found at a shallow depth, but time, the pool of transparent water, is deceiving, and our hands grasp only emptiness.
Thinking that they have mastered at least two centuries of music, contemporary musicians are accustomed to reducing all to a single, abstract common denominator.
But listening to recordings of the great pianists of the past, we discover that their style is much closer to the playing of contemporary harpsichordists than to academic
interpretations! Those old masters hit the target without having had the musicological knowledge that is currently available. Would it not be better to free ourselves from
the stylistic diktat that is imposed on us and, renouncing generally-accepted ideas, let ourselves be guided by our musical intuition and turn all our conceptions upside
down? Why not try to play the Baroque originals in the Romantic style or ennoble the transcriptions of those works by adding the melismas and agogic peculiar to the
harpsichord? A syncretic style? A Baroque piece performed in the style of Art Nouveau?
And then what? Many contradictions would disappear, and one would realize that dances from Rameau’s suites or Scarlatti’s sonatas are not so remote from salon
music, the tradition of which goes back to Chopin’s miniatures, whereas the caprices of Godowsky’s pieces and the stylistic research of French harpsichord music would seem to stem from the same trunk. ---
