An obvious direct comparison would be the old Wilhelm Kempff recording from DG with the same exact program. If Groh’s interpretation sounds a bit drier, maybe due to more spartan pedaling, it stands quite well in terms of sensitivity & beauty of tone. A perfect example is the 2nd intermezzo from Op. 119, where Groh changes the nature of the right hand theme in 3ds & 6ths, by emphasizing the pauses on the left hand. Although unexpected, the effect is quite revelatory in contrast to Kempff’s more traditional legato reading. On the other side of the spectrum, there’s Richard Goode more tempestuous & somehow heavier goings on a Nonesuch CD of Op. 116 & 119, as well as the earlier Op. 76.
