A great performance in phenomenal sound

This is not the only German peformance from the WW2 period in outstanding sound--the Germans pioneered magnetic tape in the war effort--but it is surely among the most spectacular. The 2nd Act, in particular, enjoys a quite amazingly vivid presence. The performance is dominated by the wonderful Sachs of Paul Schoeffler, at the height of his vocal and histrionic powers, and the glorious Stolzing of the young Ludwig Suthaus. Hilde Scheppan is a fine Eva, in sparkling voice, and Erich Kunz is among the best Beckmessers ever recorded. Friedrich (Frederick) Dahlberg, an Englishman who later enjoyed a significant career in his home country, is an authoritative Pogner. How he was able to work at Bayreuth, as a national of a country with which Germany was at war, is a fascinating question, as is, indeed, the question of how he could bring himself to do so. Hermann Abendroth, later a darling of the East German goverment, holds this huge masterpiece together with consummate skill, if not skill as dazzling as his ability to land on his feet and serve such different totalitarian masters. The date of this Bayreuth Festival recording, 16.8.1943, can hardly fail to stir reflections of what was happening throughout Europe at the very same time these beautiful sounds were being set down for posterity. The universally fine cast is let down only by the feeble Night Watchman of Erich Pina, who sounds as weak and overwhelmed as most of the world had every right to sound on that August day. This is a fascinating, sobering and historically important document.
