Elaine Paige's status as first lady of the British musical stage has been unchallenged for the best part of 20 years. This collection, a retrospective of her career so far (minus any numbers from Anything Goes), demonstrates why. She is a supreme belter of lush Lloyd Webber ballads. Occasionally, her level of attack can become a tad relentless- -her signature tune, "Memory" from Cats is high velocity stuff--but Paige has introduced much more shading into her singing over the years and the songs from Sunset Boulevard ( "With One Look", "As If We Never Said Goodbye" and "The Perfect Year") are ample proof of her skill as a musical actress. Even more impressive are the chansons from Piaf, the biographical play in which she scored a huge personal triumph as one of the century's most charismatic singers. She acknowledges Piaf's intensity but avoids glib impersonation, imbuing the songs with her own emotional style. Naturally, the set includes "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" from Evita, the show which turned her into a star and "I Know Him So Well" from Chess, the duet with Barbara Dickson which gave them a number one hit in 1984. -- Piers Ford
