The Trio in F minor op.65, composed in February and March 1883, attests to this orientation. But although it is often described as Dvořák’s most Brahmsian score, numerous passages breathe the Czech spirit – 1883 was also the year in which the composer refused the tempting commission of a German opera for Vienna and wrote the Hussite
Overture for the long-awaited inauguration of the Czech National Theatre.
The first movement, Allegro ma non troppo, is the most Brahmsian in its generous polyphony, its surging energy, its dense scoring and the cohesion of its thematic working. Dvořák’s ambition is apparent right from the first bars, where the theme is stated by the strings as if on tiptoe, in unison, then unfolded majestically with the arrival of the
piano (this opening gambit recalls that of Brahms’s Piano Quintet op.34, in the same key). But the passage where the three instruments play a stamping figure on a dotted rhythm, before the central development and again before the coda, could not be by anyone else but Dvořák. After these outpourings of passion, Dvořák prefers the lightness of a sort of intermezzo, Allegretto grazioso in C sharp minor, to the bustle of a true scherzo. The central Trio, in the enharmonic key of D flat major, exchanges the folklike tone of what precedes for more Brahmsian strains.
