Fascinating FormatWhat a program! On his first recording as theconductor of the Beethoven Orchestra of Bonn,Stefan Blunier offers us a look at four importantphases in the life of the composer Arnold Schönberg.The selection ranges from the late-romantic Notturnothrough the Orchestral Songs op. 8 to the atonalOrchestral Pieces op. 16 and the highly romantictranscription of the Prelude and Fugue BWV 552 byJohann Sebastian Bach.Premiere PerformanceSchönberg’s Notturno for harp, solo violin, and stringorchestra was long regarded as lost. Its existence wasdocumented only by a newspaper notice: in its editionof 15 March 1896 the Neue musikalische Presse ofVienna reported that the “very highly appealing”composition had been premiered by the Polyhymniaamateur string orchestra of Vienna under theSchönberg pupil Alexander Zemlinsky. The work waslater identified and edited on the basis of originalfingerings in the violoncello part. The BeethovenOrchestra of Bonn has now recorded this work for thefirst time.
