剧本的作者查理·詹宁斯（Mr. Jenmens 1700～1773）是伦敦当时相当富有的人，他以写文章及剧本为至高之乐趣，并充满达到顶尖的雄心。他自认是当时最杰出的剧作能手，饱读莎士比亚的剧作，对于许多古典文学作品也涉猎广泛。亨德尔在1725 年开始与他成为好友，发现詹氏对他的音乐了解至深而相当惊讶，后来就采用了詹氏的脚本写清唱剧，如「扫罗王」及「伯沙撒王」等，而「弥赛亚」则是詹氏心目中精心的作品，不过，他大概做梦也没有想到它会成为万世留芳的脚本（甚至有人曾说它是「前古无人，后无来者」的杰作），与亨德尔同被歌颂，永不褪色。
