　　歌曲作于六十年代末，是奥斯卡奖影片《毕业生》（THE GRADUTE，1967）的插曲之一，改编自一首十七世纪英格兰民谣，联系当时的时代背景（越南战争），不难领会歌曲的内涵。这首歌保罗-西蒙（Paul Simon）和加芬克尔（Carfunkel）唱得温柔，怀旧，凄美，轻盈，色彩浓郁。他们用沉思在努力回忆起一件旧事，并且从容述说。背景里有森林、花草、坟墓上的露珠、发亮的枪管。莎拉-布莱曼翻唱过，还是喜欢原唱。
　　歌曲以一位在战火中亡故的普通士兵的口吻唱出，他再也不能回到那朝思暮想的家乡，再也不能与心上人一同享受生活的甘甜了。这是一个在战争中死去的青年，他的灵魂面对世界的轻诉。缓慢悠闲的低八度旋律，只靠单吉它的细碎伴奏，早晨般清纯自然的声线，如一阕初秋的小令，精致、散逸。更如一声声轻柔、舒长、真切的叹息，沁透着淡淡的忧愁，浅浅的感伤。小小心心吐着词，抒着情，仿佛一不小心便会碰坏了什么。真轻啊，轻得没有重量，只有质量……
  　战争在血光中爆发，将军们命令士兵冲锋，为了一个他们早已忘记的原由。大战前的宁静，积雪覆盖的灌木丛中，悄悄告诉树顶的麻雀，为家乡的亲人带去他的消息。“告诉她为我做件薄衣，告诉她为我找块土地，告诉她收获之日采束石南花……”轻缓的旋律勾出了淡淡的思念、浓浓的离愁，以及对青春逝去的无限怅惘。

　　闲来无事，听歌，听老歌。Scarborough Fair是我很喜欢的一首老歌。因为它不那么美国，因为它那种幽怨的低唱。我总觉得它和诗经有一种很微妙的契合，纵然一个是公元之前，而另一个是百世以后。它的旋律，仿佛是一阵清风，夹杂着野草野花的苦寒轻香，在大地上缓缓掠过；而我更看见一个穿白衣服的人摇着木铎，边走边呼唤着苍穹，在一望无际的大地与村庄之间采集梦幻。真的很难忘却这种莫名的联想。很喜欢在异邦的文明之中，还能寻出这样令我心折的古中国的意韵。试着用诗经的格式翻了下，填到原曲中，竟也能唱。
