音乐剧《悲惨世界》1980年在巴黎体育馆首演，颇有影响，但由于制作不力等原因早早落幕。1985年，英国金牌戏剧制作人卡梅隆·麦金托什将Claude-Michel Schönberg和Alain Boublil两位法国主创请到伦敦，对该剧重新包装制作，精心打造舞美服装，增加曲目，并由Herbert Kretzmer创作英语歌词，将其搬上了伦敦西区的舞台，票房火爆，取得了前所未有的巨大成功。1987年该剧纽约剧组成立并进行首演，演出同样轰动了百老汇。
从1985首演到2012年，该剧先后在45个国家演出，并翻译制作了21种不同的语言版本，获得了多项艺术和戏剧奖项。 2002年，该剧首次来内地演出，在上海大剧院连演35场。《悲惨世界》已成为世界音乐剧史上的经典作品。动听的音乐和歌词深深打动着观众。目前，该剧是伦敦西区商业连演时间最长的音乐剧。在各地演出累计的票房压倒任何一部电影作品。
