The Sound of the Life of the Mind is the fourth studio album by Ben Folds Five, released on September 18, 2012. It is the group's first release since 1999's The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner.In 2011, the original three members of Ben Folds Five came together to record three new studio tracks for The Best Imitation Of Myself: A Retrospective, a career-spanning Ben Folds anthology. With the band's magic rekindled while making the new tracks, Ben Folds Five gave its first concert in more than a decade to a spellbound audience at New York s Mountain Jam Festival on June 2, 2012. Now, Ben Folds Five return with The Sound Of The Life of the Mind, the group's first album of new music in 13 years.
The album cover features an exclusive piece entitled "Submerged" by artist Eric Joyner, noted for the focus on robots and donuts as the main subjects of his work. The somber yet whimsical piece showcases a toy robot pondering existence while resting on a mossy rock undersea as fish swim about it. The image evokes French sculptor Auguste Rodin's renowned work Le Penseur. More of Joyner's artwork is featured throughout the physical packaging of the album.
