Bob Mould's pissed. And he apparently has been since the making of his last full-length, 2019’s upbeat Sunshine Rock. "American Crisis," the noisy, abrasive state-of-the-nation address that's Blue Hearts' key track, was written two years back for Sunshine Rock but Mould withheld it, feeling it too heavy and dark for those bright pop surfaces. When congregating with his long-time rhythm section (Jon Wurster on drums and Jason Narducy on bass) earlier this year to begin tracking on his 13th solo album, the trio felt it was time to make an angry punk rock statement; the times certainly called for it. So the material radiated from "American Crisis" outward, sounding like the return of the band that Mould built his name back in the early ‘80s—Hüsker Dü.
