A few commentators, deliberately setting aside the spectacular dimensions of some of his works, claim that
Berlioz is the composer of intimacy, of sensitivity, as he showed in L’Enfance du Christ and, above all,
in Les Nuits d’été, the inaugural masterpiece of the mélodie, a genre emblematic of French musical and poetic taste,
in which every generation of composers down to the present day was to follow him with delicacy. Others, the majority,
tell us that Berlioz is a genius of the extraordinary, extravagant, unbridled (sometimes even delirious), who invented
the modern orchestra and broke free from formal constraints with his incredible forces, his striving for effect, and his
constant outpouring of timbres and colours, on which Wagner, Mahler, Strauss, Debussy and Ravel, to name just a few,
were to draw. It is true that the Symphonie fantastique, as early as 1830, and Harold en Italie, in 1834, ushered in an
age of orchestral and compositional revolutions. Yet such revolutions, in Berlioz, never lack intimacy and delicacy. Thus
Berlioz is situated on both sides at once, and between the two opposing poles. As indeed he is temporally. Always less
respectful of his contemporaries than of his elders (Gluck, Spontini, Beethoven, Weber) but always visionary, a seeker
after unexpected sounds, in search of virgin land and new possibilities.
