Ferdinand Ries (1784-1838) started to write piano sonatas when the genre had drastically changed in the course of a rapid development. Since 1803 at the latest he had been in Vienna as one of Beethoven's piano students and served the composer as a copyist and correspondent with publishers. Beethoven was very impressed with his young student, and entrusted him with playing the solo part in a performance of the piano concerto no. 3 on 1804.
